Chapter 2 - The Evidence in the Lens

Dominic stared at her for a long minute, a dangerous, unreadable expression on his face. Then, he pulled a tablet from his jacket. He tapped the screen and propped it up on the vanity.
It was security footage from the library, dated two weeks ago. Maya watched as Evelyn leaned over Vincent, her hand tight around his wrist, pressing him to sign a document. When he refused, she pinched his arm, hard. Then, another clip—Evelyn dumping cold water on him because he spilled tea on the carpet.
Maya felt her blood run cold. "You knew?"

"I suspected," Dominic murmured, his voice strained. "But she was the perfect face for the public, and I... I was distracted." He looked at the screen, then at Maya. "The handprint on his face today. That was the first time anyone—anyone—has stood up for him in ten years."
He turned off the tablet. "You aren't fired, Maya. You’re promoted. If you want to protect him, you will do it from the inside of my inner circle. And if you betray me, I will make sure you wish you hadn't."
