Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire
The trial of Beatrice and Victoria Sterling was the media circus of the decade.
It dominated every news channel, podcast, and front page in the country. The evidence on the flash drive was insurmountable. The financial records proved the theft of the Hayes estate, and the toxicology reports provided by Dr. Vance proved the attempted murder of Elena.
Julian took the stand as a hostile witness against his own mother. He was ruthless, dismantling her defense attorneys with the same cold precision he once used to dismantle rival corporations.
When Beatrice tried to play the victim, claiming she only wanted to protect her family’s legacy, the jury was visibly disgusted.
The verdict was swift.
Beatrice Sterling was sentenced to life in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Victoria, having pled out and turned on her mother to save herself, still received twenty years for conspiracy and fraud.
The Sterling Vanguard empire was liquidated. The courts ordered massive restitutions to be paid to the state and various charities, but the bulk of the remaining fortune—over four billion dollars—was legally transferred to the sole surviving heir of the Hayes family: Elena.
In a single stroke of a judge's pen, Elena became one of the wealthiest women in the world.
But as she walked out of the courthouse, holding Julian’s hand, she didn't look like a billionaire. She just looked free.
Reporters swarmed them on the courthouse steps.
"Mrs. Sterling! What will you do with the Vanguard fortune?"
Elena stopped, looking directly into the cameras.

"Sterling Vanguard is dead," she said calmly. "The money will be used to establish the Hayes Foundation, dedicated to funding legal aid for victims of corporate theft, and providing resources for children in the foster care system. My husband and I are leaving the corporate world behind."
And with that, they got into their car and drove away, leaving the ruins of a toxic legacy in their rearview mirror forever.
