Chapter 5 - The War of Billions

By Monday morning, Wall Street was in chaos.

Sterling Vanguard, the titan of real estate and venture capital, was bleeding cash at an unprecedented rate. Shares plummeted by thirty percent within the first hour of trading.

Back at the Hamptons estate, Beatrice Sterling threw a crystal vase against the wall of her study. It shattered into a thousand pieces.

"What do you mean, the accounts are frozen?" she screamed at her wealth manager over the phone.

"Julian triggered a hostile corporate lock-out, Mrs. Sterling," the manager stammered. "He holds the primary cryptographic keys to the offshore holdings. He’s liquidating assets and moving them into a blind trust we can't trace. You have zero liquidity."

Victoria stormed into the room, her face pale. "Mother, my credit cards just declined at Bergdorf's. And the staff... the staff just walked out. Julian stopped their payroll."

Beatrice slammed the phone down. "He’s trying to bankrupt us to protect that little street rat."

"What do we do?" Victoria panicked. "If he goes to the police with those files—"

"He won't," Beatrice sneered, regaining her icy composure. "If he destroys the company, he destroys his own legacy. He’s bluffing. Call the Chief of Police. Tell him Julian has suffered a mental breakdown and has abducted Elena. Put a million-dollar bounty on their location."

But Beatrice drastically underestimated her son.

In the Catskills, Julian sat at a bank of monitors, systematically dismantling his own empire. He wasn't bluffing; he was amputating the infected limb.

Elena sat beside him, wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot broth. The color had returned to her cheeks.

"You're destroying your life's work," she said softly, watching the stock tickers plummet red.

"It was never my life's work. It was stolen property," Julian corrected, typing a final line of code that transferred the last of the liquid assets into an escrow account. "I'm just preparing to return it to its rightful owner. You."

Elena stared at him. "Julian..."

"We need a public stage," Julian said, ignoring her shock. "My mother operates in the shadows. We have to drag her into the light, where she can't use her money to buy silence."

"The annual Sterling Foundation Charity Gala is this Friday," Elena noted, pointing to an email on the screen. "It’s being held at the Metropolitan Museum. The governor will be there. The mayor. Every major news outlet."

Julian smiled—a terrifying, predatory smile. "Perfect. We’re going to a party."
