Chapter 6 - The Charity Trap

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was transformed into a glittering palace of hypocrisy. Thousands of white orchids dripped from the ceiling, and Manhattan’s elite floated through the halls in custom couture, drinking champagne funded by extortion.

Beatrice Sterling stood at the grand staircase, playing the role of the tragic, brave matriarch. Victoria hovered behind her, glaring at anyone who didn't offer immediate sympathy.

"It’s just been so difficult," Beatrice sighed to a group of reporters, dabbing a dry eye with a silk handkerchief. "My son Julian has suffered a severe psychological break. He has taken his poor, pregnant wife to an undisclosed location. We are praying for their safe return."

"Mrs. Sterling, is it true the company is facing insolvency?" a sharp-eyed financial journalist asked.

Before Beatrice could spin a lie, the heavy brass doors of the museum swung open.

The room fell dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing mid-note.

Julian Sterling stood in the entryway, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. Beside him, holding his arm, was Elena. She wore a stunning, emerald-green gown that proudly accentuated her pregnant belly. She looked radiant, powerful, and very much alive.

They were flanked by Marcus and six heavily armed private security contractors.

Beatrice’s face drained of color. The champagne flute in Victoria’s hand shattered as she dropped it.

Cameras flashed like a thunderstorm. Reporters immediately shoved their microphones forward.

"Julian! Julian! What do you have to say about your mother’s claims?"

Julian walked calmly toward the grand staircase, parting the sea of billionaires like Moses parting the Red Sea. He stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking directly up at his mother.

"I have plenty to say," Julian announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He pulled a small, silver flash drive from his pocket. "I’m here to announce a massive charitable donation. Tonight, the Sterling family is giving away everything."

The crowd gasped.

"Julian, stop this madness immediately," Beatrice hissed, breaking her sweet facade. "Security! Remove him!"

"Your security works for me now, Mother," Julian replied coldly. He handed the flash drive to a journalist from the New York Times. "On that drive is irrefutable proof that Sterling Vanguard was built on arson, murder, and theft. The victims were Jonathan and Clara Hayes."

Elena stepped forward, her voice steady and clear. "My parents."
