Chapter 8 - The Ledger

Evelyn reached out with her uninjured hand and typed the code into the keypad.

The heavy steel door of the safe clicked open.

Mark reached inside and pulled out a thick, black external hard drive and a stack of passports.

"This is it," Mark confirmed, slipping the drive into his tactical vest.

Suddenly, the sound of police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

"The neighbors must have heard the gunshot," I said, panic rising in my chest.

"We have to go, right now," Mark yelled, grabbing my shoulder.

We sprinted out the back door, leaving Evelyn and her unconscious guards on the floor of the office.

We jumped the backyard fence just as two police cruisers screeched to a halt in front of the house.

We ran through the dark, winding alleyways of the neighborhood until we reached Mark's hidden SUV.

As we drove away, Mark plugged the hard drive into his laptop to verify the contents.

The screen instantly filled with thousands of names, transaction records, and horrifying photographs.

"We have judges, politicians, and police chiefs on this list," Mark said, his face pale in the glow of the screen.

"This isn't just a local ring, David, this is a massive, nationwide syndicate."

We had the ultimate weapon to destroy them, but it also made us the biggest targets in the country.

We needed to hand this over to the FBI immediately.
