Chapter 6 - The Trap

We couldn't leave Lily alone in the motel room, so Mark called in a favor.

A trusted female colleague of his, a former federal marshal named Elena, arrived an hour later to guard Lily.

Elena was armed and assured me that no one would get past the front door of the room.

I kissed my sleeping daughter one last time and climbed into Mark's SUV.

We drove back to our hometown under the cover of absolute darkness.

The house with the blue door looked entirely different at two in the morning.

It looked like a massive, silent tomb.

Mark handed me a heavy flashlight and a crowbar.

"We go in, we find the safe, we grab the hard drive, and we get out in under five minutes," Mark instructed.

We approached the back of the house, easily bypassing the broken window from earlier that morning.

Mark picked the lock on the heavy kitchen door with terrifying speed.

We stepped inside, our flashlights cutting through the thick, oppressive darkness of the hallway.

We moved silently toward the office at the back of the house, where Evelyn handled the money.

Mark found a hidden wall safe behind a large, ugly oil painting.

He attached a small, electronic deciphering tool to the keypad.

Suddenly, the lights in the room violently flicked on.

Evelyn was standing in the doorway, pointing a silver revolver directly at my chest.
