Chapter 9 - The Fallout

The consequences of the trial sent shockwaves through our extended family.

Aunt Susan, Jason, and the rest of the enablers who had laughed that day tried to distance themselves. They sent me awkward text messages, claiming they hadn't realized how serious it was, that they had been blinded by my parents.

I didn't reply to a single one.

My parents' social circle abandoned them. The country club asked my father to resign. My mother’s friends stopped inviting her to luncheons. They had built their entire lives on appearing perfect, and the ugly, abusive rot at the core of their family had been dragged into the light for the entire city to see.

They were left with exactly what they deserved: each other, and absolute isolation.

Meanwhile, our lives became intensely quiet. Peaceful. I sold the house in our old neighborhood and bought a small place in a neighboring town, close to a park with paved, accessible trails.

Lily thrived. Without the constant anxiety of running into my toxic family, the light returned to her eyes. She worked incredibly hard in physical therapy. The second surgery had been a complete success.
