Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

By Friday, the family had declared absolute war.
Vanessa had posted bail, funded entirely by my parents. Because the arrest had humiliated her publicly, she decided to play the victim on social media. She posted a tearful video on Facebook, claiming she had an "unstable, toxic brother" who was keeping his daughter from her loving family and using the legal system to extort them.
My aunts and uncles flooded the comments, calling me a disgrace. The video got hundreds of shares. People who didn't know me were sending me hateful messages, calling me a terrible father for "tearing a family apart."
I sat by Lily's hospital bed, watching her sleep peacefully, feeling the weight of the world crushing my chest. I felt entirely alone.
Then, there was a knock on the door. It was Dr. Evans. He held a tablet in his hand.
"I saw the video your sister posted," he said, his jaw set in a hard line.
"It's a nightmare," I sighed. "They have everyone convinced I'm the villain."
"Not everyone," Dr. Evans said. He tapped the screen and handed the tablet to me. "I don't just fix bones. I sit on the board of the pediatric hospital, and I have a platform."

I looked at the screen. Dr. Evans had posted a response on his professional page, which had over fifty thousand followers. He didn't use names, citing HIPAA, but he described the medical reality of the assault he had witnessed on a pediatric patient. He dismantled Vanessa's "independence" narrative with brutal, cold medical facts about congenital bone defects and the catastrophic damage caused by forced mobility.
The internet turned on Vanessa instantly.
