Chapter 6 - The Restraining Order

The backlash from Dr. Evans's post was instantaneous and fierce. Vanessa’s real estate firm, bombarded with calls from outraged community members, quietly placed her on indefinite, unpaid leave.
But my family wasn't done.
On Sunday morning, while I was wheeling Lily out of the hospital for discharge, I saw my father’s truck aggressively pull up to the loading zone. My mother and father jumped out.
"There he is!" my father yelled, pointing a finger at me. "You think you can ruin your sister's life and just walk away? You're dropping the charges today, or I’ll sue you for defamation!"
Lily whimpered, shrinking down into her wheelchair, clutching her bear.
"Stay away from us," I warned, stepping between the wheelchair and my father.
"She’s my granddaughter!" my mother cried, reaching for Lily.
Before she could make contact, two hospital security guards, alerted by the front desk, stepped in and physically blocked them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," a voice echoed. Dr. Evans walked out of the sliding doors, flanked by a police officer. "You are trespassing on hospital property and harassing a patient. If you do not leave immediately, you will be arrested."

My father glared at Dr. Evans, realizing he had absolutely no power here. They backed away, hurling insults as they got into their truck.
That afternoon, with the hospital security footage as evidence, a judge granted a temporary, emergency restraining order against my parents and my sister. They were legally forbidden from coming within 500 feet of me or Lily.
