Chapter 2 - The Line in the Sand

Panic erupted in the living room.
My brother Jason suddenly found his feet, holding his hands up. "Whoa, bro, let's not overreact. Cops? It’s dad's birthday. Don't ruin this."
"You ruined it the second you laughed at my daughter screaming in pain," I spat, holding the phone to my ear as the dispatcher answered. I gave them the address and the details of the injury.
Dr. Evans was already working. He pulled a rolled-up magazine from the coffee table and used his own scarf to create a makeshift splint, stabilizing Lily's leg so she wouldn't do further damage. Lily buried her face in my shoulder, her tears soaking my shirt, trembling like a leaf.
"I’m here, baby," I whispered, kissing her head. "I’ve got you."
Vanessa threw the gray brace onto the couch, her face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and rage. "You are psychotic! You're really going to let this... this stranger dictate how our family handles things?"
"He's not a stranger, Vanessa," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "He's the man who gave my daughter a chance to walk. You’re the monster who just tried to take it away."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second. My mother grabbed my arm, her manicured nails digging into my skin. "Please, stop this. Think of the neighbors! What will people say?"

I looked at the woman who raised me, seeing her clearly for the very first time. She cared more about her reputation than her granddaughter's shattered leg. I yanked my arm away.
"I don't care what they say," I told her. "I have no family here."
