Chapter 1 - The Surgeon’s Wrath

The silence in the living room was absolute, broken only by Lily’s ragged, breathless sobbing.

Dr. Evans didn’t wait for an invitation. He strode across the room, his dark trench coat sweeping behind him, exuding an aura of pure, clinical authority. He dropped to his knees beside Lily, his large, steady hands gently hovering over her twisted leg.

"Lily, it's Dr. Evans," he said, his voice instantly dropping the fury and adopting a calm, soothing tone. "I need you to take a deep breath for me. Do not try to move it."

My mother finally snapped out of her shock. "Now wait just a minute!" she fluttered, stepping forward. "It was just a little tumble! There’s no need to make a scene—"

"Step back," Dr. Evans commanded. He didn’t shout, but the icy, jagged edge in his voice made my mother physically flinch. He didn’t even look at her; his eyes were glued to Lily’s swollen ankle.

Vanessa, still holding the torn velcro strap, crossed her arms defensively. "Oh, please. You're enabling her. She threw herself on the floor. It’s a temper tantrum."

Dr. Evans slowly turned his head. His eyes locked onto Vanessa.

"I performed a complex osteotomy on this child twelve weeks ago," he said, his voice dangerously low. "I grafted bone. I inserted titanium pins. This brace was the only thing holding her fractured anatomy in alignment while the fusion solidified. And I just watched you violently rip it off and assault my patient."

Vanessa’s smug smile faltered. "Assault? I didn't assault anyone, I was just—"

"Call 911," Dr. Evans said, looking directly at me. "Tell them a pediatric post-op patient has suffered a traumatic, forced removal of a medical device and requires immediate transport. Then, tell them to send the police. We are filing charges for child abuse."

My father’s face turned purple. "In my house? The hell you are!"

"Watch me," I growled, pulling my phone from my pocket and dialing.
