Chapter 1 - The Descent

Roman dropped the phone onto the mahogany desk.
The sound was soft, but it echoed like a gunshot in the silent room.
He did not waste time asking questions.
He did not hesitate.
Within seconds, he was moving toward the private elevator.
His mind was a storm far more violent than the one raging outside his windows.

He pulled out his secondary phone and dialed his head of security.
"Get the SUV ready," Roman ordered, his voice like cracked ice.
"Boss, the roads are completely buried," the security chief argued.
"If the car cannot make it, I will walk, but you will have it waiting," Roman snarled.

Roman ended the call.
His heart, a muscle he had long thought dead, was hammering against his ribs.

She had left behind her rings, her clothes, and a note that said she could no longer live in his dark world.
He had torn the city apart looking for her.
He had burned down rival territories on the mere suspicion that they had taken her.
Now, he knew the truth.
She had not been taken.
She had run because she was carrying his child.
The elevator chimed, and the doors opened to the freezing concrete of the garage.
Three black SUVs were already idling, their headlights cutting through the gloom.
Roman climbed into the back of the lead vehicle.

"St. Jude’s Medical Center," he commanded.
"Drive through anything that gets in your way."
