Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Wrath

Margaret Grant did not wait long to declare a vicious, open war against me.

The very next morning, an emergency board of directors meeting was aggressively called by the Grant family's allied shareholders.

They intended to legally claim that Richard Hawthorne was losing his mind and that I was a deceitful corporate spy manipulating a sick, elderly man.

I sat completely still in the glass-walled conference room, arranging my digital files with deliberate, maddening precision.

Victoria marched into the room alongside her mother, Margaret, who looked ready to commit a violent murder.

Margaret wore a terrifying, arrogant scowl and a massive mink coat that probably cost more than my entire college tuition.

“You have made a grave, fatal mistake, you little trailer-park gold-digger,” Margaret hissed, leaning aggressively over my chair.

“By the end of this hour, you will be in police handcuffs, and Richard will be locked away in a nursing home.”

I did not even bother looking up from my glowing laptop screen.

“Good morning to you too, Margaret,” I said cheerfully, typing a few final commands into the system.

“I sincerely hope you brought your best defense lawyers today.”

The various board members filed into the room, their faces grim, nervous, and utterly terrified of the brewing storm.

Victoria took a seat at the far end of the massive table, actively refusing to make any eye contact with me.

She looked entirely exhausted, the arrogant, indestructible shine completely scrubbed from her normally flawless demeanor.

Richard entered the room last, taking his rightful position at the absolute head of the long mahogany table.

“Let us completely skip the fake pleasantries today,” Richard announced forcefully to the dead-silent room.

“Emily, please show these people exactly what is on your screen.”

I confidently pressed a single button, and the massive projector instantly illuminated the blank wall directly behind me.
