Chapter 6 - The Secret Ledger

Destroying Julian in family court wasn't enough. My father’s investigators had kept digging, and what they found was a goldmine of absolute ruin.

During his time at the investment firm, Julian had been desperate to keep up appearances and fund his lifestyle with Seraphina. He didn't just steal from our joint accounts; he had been skimming money off the top of his clients' portfolios. And he hadn't just stolen from anyone. He had skimmed from aggressive, unregulated private equity investors who did not take kindly to being robbed.

I sat in my father’s study, looking at the encrypted ledger the investigators had recovered from Julian’s old work laptop.

“He stole two million dollars,” my father said, pouring a glass of scotch. “These investors are ruthless, Clara. If we anonymously leak this ledger to them, Julian won't just go to jail. He will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder.”

I thought about my three boys sleeping upstairs. I thought about the sheer cruelty in Julian’s eyes when he told me nobody would ever want me.

“Send it,” I said coldly. “Send it to every single client he defrauded. Let the wolves have him.”

Within forty-eight hours, the ledger was leaked. Julian’s phone began ringing incessantly. Threats were left on his voicemail. Thugs showed up at his apartment complex, pounding on his door in the middle of the night.

Terrified for his life, Julian did the only thing a coward knows how to do. He tried to run.
