Chapter 6 - The Freezing of Assets

Vanessa’s high-priced defense attorney, a man in a slick gray suit, showed up at the precinct demanding her release.

He claimed the evidence was circumstantial and that my father's death was natural.

But he didn't know about the flash drive I had found in the floorboard.

The drive contained hidden security footage my father had secretly installed in his own bedroom.

I sat in the precinct conference room and played the video for Detective Harrison and the District Attorney.

The screen showed a black-and-white recording of Vanessa standing over my father's bed.

She was clearly seen mixing a white substance into his water glass and forcing him to drink it while he weakly pushed her away.

The room went dead silent as the video ended.

"Get the judge on the phone right now," the DA barked at his assistant.

"I want her accounts frozen, her passport seized, and no bail."

Within two hours, Vanessa’s defense attorney walked out of the precinct without his client.

She was officially charged with first-degree murder, elder abuse, and massive corporate fraud.

I walked out into the glaring Texas sun, taking my first deep breath in days.

The battle wasn't over, but the enemy was finally behind bars.
