Chapter 5 - The Hospital Vigil

The next morning, I sat by Grandma's hospital bed.

She was hooked up to an IV, receiving fluids and nutrients her body desperately needed.

The doctors confirmed severe dehydration, malnutrition, and signs of prolonged physical restraint.

When she finally opened her eyes, the fear that had clouded them yesterday was gone.

"Are they gone?" she asked, her voice slightly stronger.

"They're in custody, Grandma," I promised, holding her warm hand.

"They are never coming back to our house."

She let out a long breath, a tear slipping down her cheek.

She told me how Vanessa had isolated my father, changing his medications and firing his trusted nurses.

When Grandma caught Vanessa slipping powder into his evening tea, Vanessa had locked her away.

"Your father tried to fight it," she whispered.

"But he was so weak, Claire, and he just wanted to protect you from her."

I kissed her forehead, feeling a fresh wave of determination wash over me.

I pulled out my laptop and started emailing my father's corporate lawyers.

I attached the secondary will and the private investigator's report.

It was time to freeze every single asset Vanessa thought she controlled.
