Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law's Gambit
The afternoon heat was oppressive when another luxury car pulled into the driveway.
It was Eleanor, her cruel mother-in-law, returning exactly as she had promised.
This time, she brought the local county sheriff and a woman from child protective services.
"I told you I was coming back for my granddaughters," Eleanor declared, stepping out of the air-conditioned car.
"This environment is a toxic, hazardous wasteland, and you are completely unfit."
The sheriff, a man clearly on Silas's payroll, rested his hand heavily on his weapon.
"Ma'am, we have a legal court order to remove the children from these dangerous premises," the sheriff announced.
Elena felt a massive surge of primal, protective rage course through her veins.
She walked out onto the porch, looking down at the people trying to destroy her family.
"You have absolutely no right to take my children," Elena said, her voice echoing with newfound authority.
"The court order explicitly states the land lacks running water and basic financial stability," the social worker chimed in.
Elena smiled, a cold, calculating expression that made Eleanor take a step back.
"Then you should probably update your paperwork," Elena replied smoothly.
She walked over to the side of the house and turned the heavy metal crank of the old pump she had fixed that morning.
A massive, rushing stream of crystal-clear water erupted from the pipe, soaking the dry earth.
The sheriff gasped, completely bewildered by the impossible sight.
Elena then reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills she had found in the box.
"I also have secured private funding to completely renovate this entire estate," Elena declared proudly.
"My daughters are perfectly safe, perfectly healthy, and perfectly provided for."
Eleanor's jaw literally dropped, her face turning a deep, furious shade of red.

The social worker looked at the money, then at the flowing water, and shook her head.
"The grounds for removal are officially invalid," the social worker stated, turning back to the car.
