Chapter 2 - The Rising Tide

By the time the morning sun peeked over the horizon, the deep pit was completely full.
Crystal clear water reflected the bright blue sky above.
It was the very first water this cursed land had seen in over six long years.
Elena dragged the heavy steel box into the ruined farmhouse and hid it under the floorboards.
She quickly washed her bleeding hands and checked on her sleeping daughters.
Lily and Mia were safe, dreaming peacefully on the torn, dusty mattress.
Suddenly, the aggressive roar of a large truck engine shattered the morning silence.
Elena peeked through the broken window boards.
A massive black pickup truck had parked directly in front of her ruined fence.
Three large, intimidating men stepped out, wearing heavy boots and cruel smiles.
They were Mr. Silas’s personal enforcers, sent to intimidate the fragile widow.
The leader, a scarred man named Briggs, walked right up to the front porch.
"Silas says your time is officially up, little lady," Briggs shouted, spitting tobacco into the dust.
Elena stepped out onto the porch, hiding the absolute terror shaking her legs.
"I am not leaving my property," Elena stated firmly, her voice surprisingly steady.
Briggs laughed, a harsh, ugly sound that echoed across the dead fields.
"You don't have water, you don't have money, and you don't have a choice," he sneered.
Then, his cruel eyes caught sight of the wet mud leading toward the back of the house.
He aggressively pushed past Elena, walking straight toward the digging site.
Briggs stopped dead in his tracks, staring down into the overflowing well.
"That is impossible," Briggs whispered, his face turning pale with shock.
"The water is back," Elena said, stepping up right behind him.

"Tell Mr. Silas that this land is alive, and it belongs completely to me."
The men exchanged nervous, panicked glances before rushing back to their truck.
