Chapter 8 - The Desperate Rescue

Isabella leaned her full weight against the heavy nursery door, her voice raw and hoarse from pleading.
"Vanessa, remember when we were young? Remember when we promised to always protect each other?" Isabella cried out, trying to reach a shred of humanity that no longer existed.
"Do not pretend you care about me!" Vanessa screamed back, the sound of a heavy chair dragging across the floor indicating she was barricading the door.
"You always had the perfect life, the perfect husband, the perfect children!"
Inside the nursery, Vanessa was pacing erratically, holding a heavy brass candlestick tightly in her hand.
Lily and Rose were huddled together in the corner of their massive playpen, sobbing and calling for their father.
Vanessa glared at them, her eyes wide and completely void of sanity.
"Stop crying!" Vanessa snapped, raising the heavy brass object threateningly.
Before she could take another step toward the terrified girls, the doors of the large walk-in closet suddenly burst open.
Arthur exploded from the shadows like a terrifying force of nature, covered in dust and drywall.
Vanessa gasped, spinning around in absolute shock, raising the candlestick to strike him.
But Arthur was significantly faster, driven by the primal need to protect his blood.
He tackled her violently to the floor, knocking the heavy brass weapon from her grip.
Vanessa fought like a wild animal, scratching and clawing at his face, screaming curses at the top of her lungs.
Arthur pinned her wrists to the expensive rug, using his full body weight to hold the thrashing woman down.
"Open the door, girls! Turn the lock!" Arthur yelled over Vanessa's frantic screaming.
Little Lily, bravely wiping her tears, scrambled out of the playpen and reached up on her tiptoes.
With shaking fingers, she turned the deadbolt and pulled the heavy brass handle down.
Isabella burst into the room instantly, falling to her knees and gathering her two crying daughters into her arms.
"Mommy's here, Mommy's right here," Isabella wept, kissing their heads repeatedly.
The girls clung to her fiercely, burying their faces in her neck, completely safe in their true mother's embrace.
Arthur managed to pull a heavy silk tie from a nearby chair, quickly and efficiently binding Vanessa's hands behind her back.
He stood up, dragging the defeated, screaming woman to her feet with zero gentleness.
"The police are already on their way, Vanessa," Arthur sneered, pushing her toward the hallway.
"You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a concrete box."

Vanessa looked at Isabella holding the children, her face contorting in ultimate, bitter defeat.
She had played the ultimate game of deception, and she had lost everything.
