Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Rain

The sky above Chicago broke open, unleashing a torrential downpour that flooded the city streets.
Clara walked quickly down the sidewalk, holding a flimsy umbrella against the aggressive, howling wind.
She was carrying two heavy bags of groceries, sent out on a menial errand by a very smug Vanessa.
Clara’s head was still throbbing with fragmented memories, flashes of a life that felt both alien and incredibly dear.
She approached a quiet, dimly lit intersection, waiting for the pedestrian light to turn green.
She did not notice the black, heavily tinted SUV idling in the alleyway just a few yards behind her.
As Clara stepped off the curb, the SUV's engine roared to life with terrifying ferocity.
The massive vehicle accelerated rapidly, its headlights cutting through the heavy rain, aiming straight for her fragile body.
Clara turned her head at the sound of the screeching tires, freezing like a deer trapped in the headlights.
There was no time to run, no time to scream, only time to brace for the inevitable impact.
Suddenly, a sleek silver sports car violently swerved into the intersection, slamming directly into the side of the black SUV.
The horrific sound of crunching metal and shattering glass echoed loudly over the pouring rain.
The black SUV spun out of control, crashing violently into a concrete streetlight, while the silver car skidded to a halt.
Clara dropped her groceries, screaming in sheer terror as she fell backward onto the wet pavement.
The door of the silver car kicked open, and Arthur Sterling stepped out into the pouring rain.
He did not even glance at the wrecked SUV as he sprinted desperately toward Clara.
"Clara!" he yelled, dropping to his knees in the puddles and pulling her frantically into his arms.
"Are you hurt? Did he hit you?"
Clara was sobbing hysterically, burying her face into his wet, expensive suit jacket.
"No, you saved me," she cried, clinging to him with a desperate, crushing grip.
Arthur held her impossibly tight, burying his face in her wet hair, thanking every star in the universe that he had followed her.
He had placed a tracking device on her phone that morning, trusting his instincts that Vanessa would strike.
As they knelt in the rain, Arthur’s encrypted phone buzzed violently in his pocket.
He pulled it out with a shaking hand, swiping the screen to open the message from the genetics lab.
The bold, green letters glowed brightly in the darkness of the storm.
Probability of Maternity: 99.99%.
Arthur stared at the screen, the breath completely leaving his body in a massive, overwhelming rush.
He looked down at the scarred, terrified woman trembling in his arms.
"Isabella," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of immense joy and soul-crushing sorrow.
May you like
Clara looked up at him, her beautiful eyes widening as that name echoed violently through her shattered mind.
The dam broke, the mental walls crumbled, and a tidal wave of stolen memories flooded back into her brain.
