Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Memory

The billionaire, Arthur Sterling, stood frozen in the doorway of the opulent nursery.

The heavy mahogany door slipped from his grasp, shutting with a soft click that sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.

His heart hammered violently against his ribs as he stared at the impossible scene unfolding before his eyes.

His twin daughters, Lily and Rose, were clutching the apron of the newly hired nanny, Clara.

Tears streamed down the little girls' cheeks, staining the pristine white fabric of the servant's uniform.

Arthur’s current wife, Vanessa, stood a few feet away, her face flushed with an ugly, twisted rage.

"She is just a maid!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly off the vaulted ceilings.

"Get your hands off my children right now, you pathetic woman!"

But the twins only cried harder, burying their tiny faces into Clara's comforting embrace.

Through heavy, heartbroken tears, little Lily looked up at her father and whispered the words that made his blood run cold.

"No, she feels like real Mommy."

"She hums our special melody."

A dead, suffocating silence filled the massive room.

Arthur felt the air leave his lungs in a sudden, painful rush.

That melody was a secret, a completely unique tune that his late wife, Isabella, had composed herself.

Isabella had died in a tragic car accident three years ago, leaving Arthur completely shattered.

No one else in the entire world knew that specific sequence of musical notes.

It was a private lullaby, sung only behind the closed doors of this very nursery in the dead of night.

Arthur slowly stepped forward, his dark, commanding eyes locking onto the trembling nanny.

Clara looked up at him, her large, expressive eyes filled with genuine confusion and absolute terror.

She was a quiet woman with a jagged scar running down the side of her neck, a woman the agency had sent only two days ago.

"Where did you learn that song?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerously low octave.

Clara swallowed hard, her hands instinctively wrapping tighter around the two crying children.

"I do not know, sir," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with raw emotion.

"It just came to me when they started crying."

"It felt like I had known it my entire life."

Vanessa let out a harsh, mocking laugh that shattered the fragile tension in the room.

"She is a liar, Arthur, she probably researched our family to manipulate the girls!" Vanessa yelled, stepping closer.

"I want her fired and thrown out of this house immediately!"

Arthur did not even look at his furious wife.

His gaze remained entirely fixed on Clara, observing the way her hands gently stroked his daughters' hair.

It was the exact same rhythmic, soothing motion Isabella used to make.

"No one is getting fired tonight," Arthur said with finality, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument.

"Clara, put the girls to bed."

"Vanessa, you are coming with me right now."

Arthur turned on his heel and strode out of the nursery, leaving a storm of unanswered questions in his wake.
