Chapter 9 - The Final Hurdle

Six months later.

The winter snow had melted, giving way to a vibrant Boston spring.

Leo was sitting in a state-of-the-art pediatrician's office at Mass General Hospital. Sarah stood nervously by the window, her hand tightly gripping Dominic’s. Dominic was standing beside her, leaning lightly on a sleek, carbon-fiber cane.

The doctor walked in, holding a tablet, a broad smile on his face.

"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Thorne," the doctor said.

Sarah blushed at the title. They had been married in a quiet, private ceremony on the cliffs of the estate just two weeks prior.

"The aggressive stem-cell treatments and the new targeted immunotherapy have done their job," the doctor continued, turning the tablet around. "Leo’s blood counts are entirely normal. The autoimmune disease is officially in remission. He’s going to be a normal, healthy little boy."

Sarah broke down. She covered her face with her hands, sobbing with absolute, unadulterated joy.

Dominic dropped his cane. He wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her tight, burying his face in her neck. He looked over at Leo, who was grinning, missing two front teeth.

"Can I play baseball now, Dad?" Leo asked.

Dominic’s breath hitched at the word Dad. He swallowed hard, blinking back a rare sting of tears. "Yeah, buddy. We’ll get you a glove today."
