Chapter 2 - The Devil's Bargain

The underworld of Boston did not sleep, and neither did Julian. Within an hour of Sarah’s departure, the fortress was locked down. No one spoke of what happened in the master suite, but the shift in the air was palpable.

Dominic sat by the fire, a glass of amber bourbon untouched on the side table. He was staring at his leg. It hadn't moved again, but it felt different. For two decades, his lower half had felt like a void—a heavy block of ice. Now, there was a faint, agonizing tingle, like a limb waking up from a deep sleep.

"She left," Julian said, stepping into the room. "The fifteen thousand is in her account. Her son’s hospital bills for this month are cleared."

"Find out everything," Dominic ordered, his voice low and dangerous. "Not just the surface level. I want her ex-husband’s history. I want the exact nature of the boy’s disease. I want to know what she eats for breakfast."

"You think she's a plant?"

"I think she did what the greatest medical minds in Europe couldn't do in twenty years," Dominic said, his eyes darkening. "If my enemies find out that my legs can move... that I am healing... the balance of power in this city will fracture. I am vulnerable."

Julian nodded slowly. "And if she can actually fix you?"

"Then she is the most valuable asset I possess." Dominic finally picked up his glass. "Draw up a contract. An exclusive one. She works for me now. Only me."

The next evening, Sarah arrived at the estate not blindfolded, but in the back of a luxury sedan driven by Julian. When she entered the suite, Dominic was waiting. He pushed a leather binder across the mahogany table.

"One million dollars," Dominic stated.

Sarah froze. "What?"

"One million dollars, deposited into a trust for your son’s medical care. Complete access to my private physicians for Leo. In exchange, you move into the East Wing of this estate. You do not treat anyone else. You do not speak of this. You belong to me until I can walk out of that front door."

Sarah looked at the contract. It was everything she needed to save Leo’s life. It was also a deal with the devil. She looked at Dominic, seeing the ruthless determination in his eyes, but also the desperate, buried flicker of hope.

She picked up the gold pen. "If I do this... you have to promise me Leo is safe."

"Under my roof," Dominic swore softly, "he is the safest child in America."
