Chapter 7 - The Bridal Shower

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was transformed into a sickeningly lavish wonderland of white orchids and crystal chandeliers. It was Vanessa’s bridal shower, a high-society event covered by three different luxury magazines. The room was packed with the city’s elite—CEOs, politicians, and socialites, all sipping champagne and fawning over the beautiful, glowing bride-to-be.
Julian stood at the back of the room, holding a glass of scotch, watching Vanessa hold court. She was wearing a custom silk gown, laughing a delicate, practiced laugh, showing off the massive diamond on her finger.
Enjoy it, Julian thought, taking a sip of the burning liquor. It's the last time you'll ever wear silk.
At 8:00 PM, Julian walked up to the microphone on the small stage set up for toasts. The room quieted down, the guests turning their attention to the handsome billionaire groom. Vanessa beamed, stepping up to the stage and wrapping her arm around his waist, expecting a declaration of undying love.
"Thank you all for coming," Julian began, his voice echoing through the massive speakers. "Vanessa and I have had a very... eventful year. And as we prepare to enter into a legal, binding contract, I realized that true love is built on absolute transparency."
Vanessa smiled, batting her eyelashes at the cameras.
"I wanted to give Vanessa a gift tonight," Julian continued, pulling a small remote from his pocket. "A reflection of the woman she truly is. A showcase of her greatest accomplishments."
He pressed the button.
The massive projection screens that had been displaying photos of their engagement suddenly went black.
Then, a high-definition image flashed onto the screens. It wasn't a photo of them in Paris. It was the Cayman Islands bank transfer receipt, showing fifty thousand dollars wired to a hospital records clerk, with Vanessa’s unmistakable signature at the bottom.
A confused murmur rippled through the crowd.

"Julian, darling, what is this?" Vanessa whispered, her smile faltering, her nails digging into his arm.
Julian ignored her. He pressed the button again.
