Chapter 1 - The Signature of the Serpent

The high-definition scan of the receipt loaded onto Julian’s monitor, the stark black ink burning against the glaring white background. It was a wire transfer authorization from a Cayman Islands shell company to the personal account of a senior records administrator at the county hospital. The amount was staggering—fifty thousand dollars just to hit the 'delete' button on Claire's intake forms.
But it was the signature at the bottom of the authorization that made all the air vanish from Julian’s lungs.
Vanessa Sterling.
She hadn't even bothered to forge a proxy. She was so arrogant, so entirely convinced of her absolute control over Julian and his empire, that she signed her own name to the destruction of his family.
"She knew," Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "She knew Claire was pregnant with my children. She intercepted the hospital calls. She paid them off."
"And she didn't stop there," Marcus’s voice crackled over the encrypted line, heavy with grim professional respect. "Boss, I dug into the surveillance photos from the night you threw Claire out. The 'faceless stranger' she was supposedly meeting? I ran facial recognition on the partial jawline visible in the reflection of the town car's window. It’s an actor. A struggling off-Broadway guy named Leo Vance. Vanessa’s personal assistant wired him ten grand the morning after Claire was evicted."
Julian closed his eyes, the memory of that night rushing back with agonizing clarity. He remembered Claire sobbing on the marble floor, begging him to look at the truth. He remembered the cold, terrifying satisfaction he felt when he ordered security to drag her out into the rain. He had been so blind. So easily manipulated by Vanessa’s perfectly manicured hands.
"Where is she, Marcus?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping an octave, settling into a cold, lethal frequency. "Where is Claire sleeping tonight?"
"A place called The Starlight Motel, out by the old industrial park on Route 9," Marcus replied. "It’s bad, Julian. It’s a cash-only dive. Junkies, drifters. Not a place for a woman, let alone a woman with two infants."
"Send a shadow detail. Four men. Unmarked cars," Julian ordered, standing up and grabbing his keys. "They don't approach her. They don't speak to her. If anyone so much as looks at her or those babies the wrong way, break their legs. I'm on my way."
"What about Vanessa?" Marcus asked.

Julian paused at the door of his penthouse office. He thought of Vanessa, sitting in a luxury spa, picking out floral arrangements for a wedding that would never happen, laughing about the woman she had condemned to the streets.
"Let her plan the wedding," Julian said softly. "Let her feel untouchable. I’m going to build her a gallows out of her own arrogance."
