Chapter 6 - The Fever

While Julian built his guillotine, Claire was living in a state of suspended animation. The penthouse was beautiful, the fridge was full, and the twins were finally thriving, gaining weight and sleeping soundly. But the emotional scars ran deep. Every time the elevator chimed, she flinched, expecting Julian to storm in and take it all away.

Then, disaster struck.

It was 2:00 AM on a Tuesday. Elias woke up screaming, his tiny body radiating heat. Claire checked his temperature: 104 degrees. Panic seized her throat. In the motel, this would have been a death sentence. She had no car, no money for a cab, and a profound terror of hospitals calling child protective services on a homeless mother.

She hit the panic button Julian had installed on the intercom.

Within sixty seconds, Marcus was at the door, flanked by a private pediatric medical team Julian had kept on standby in the building for exactly this reason.

Julian arrived ten minutes later, sprinting out of the elevator in a wrinkled dress shirt, his hair disheveled. He didn't demand to take over. He didn't shout orders. He simply fell to his knees beside the couch where the doctor was examining Elias, and he reached out to hold Claire’s trembling hand.

"He's going to be okay," Julian whispered, his thumb stroking her knuckles. "I've got you. I've got him."

It was a severe ear infection. The doctor administered antibiotics and fever reducers. By 4:00 AM, Elias’s temperature had broken, and he was sleeping peacefully against Claire’s chest.

Julian sat on the floor across the room, watching them, looking exhausted but deeply relieved.

Claire looked at him, really looked at him, for the first time in a year. She saw the dark circles under his eyes. She saw the genuine, unmasked terror of a father who almost lost his son.

"You didn't have to come," Claire whispered into the quiet room. "You could have just sent the doctors."

"There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be," Julian replied, his voice rough. He slowly stood up. "I'll leave you to sleep. Marcus is outside if you need anything."

As he reached the door, Claire spoke again.

"Julian."

He stopped, turning around.

"Thank you," she said softly.

It was a tiny crack in the ice. A microscopic sliver of hope. Julian nodded, his heart swelling in his chest, and walked out into the night, more determined than ever to burn Vanessa’s world to ash.
