Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

Two weeks later, the board of directors called an emergency meeting at the Orion Bio-Systems headquarters.
Cassandra drove me to the office, holding my hand and acting like a grieving widow already.
Victor Sterling sat at the head of the massive glass conference table, looking grim and authoritative.
I walked into the room, leaning heavily on Cassandra's arm, playing the part of the broken founder.
"Julian, we are all so incredibly sorry about your declining health," Victor said loudly, projecting his voice.
I looked at him blankly, pointing to my earpiece until Cassandra leaned in and exaggerated her lip movements.
"They are sorry about your health," she mouthed slowly.
I nodded sadly, taking my seat at the end of the table and staring at my hands.
"Given the tragic circumstances, the board believes Julian is no longer fit to act as CEO," Victor announced to the room.
"We have drafted a medical proxy document transferring all voting power and executive control to his future wife, Cassandra."
The other board members murmured in agreement, fooled by the medical reports Cassandra had falsified.
Cassandra slid a thick legal document across the table toward me, handing me an expensive silver pen.
"Just sign on the dotted line, darling," she said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy.
I picked up the pen, letting my hand tremble violently as the nib hovered over the paper.
I looked up at Victor, whose eyes were shining with barely concealed greed.
Instead of signing, I slowly set the pen down and folded my hands on the glass table.

"I think I would prefer to read it first," I said, my voice perfectly clear and steady.
The room fell dead silent, the atmosphere shifting from pity to sudden, sharp confusion.
