Chapter 3 - The Truth in the Blood

The next morning, I woke up early and poured Cassandra's specially brewed chamomile tea directly down the bathroom sink.
I left the empty mug on my nightstand, feigning a deep sleep when she cracked the door open to check on me.
By nine o'clock, I was driving my sleek black sedan down the Pacific Coast Highway, heading straight for the Orion Bio-Systems headquarters.
I bypassed my executive office entirely and went down to the secure underground research laboratories.
Dr. Marcus Thorne was my oldest friend and the chief toxicologist for the company.
I walked into his sterile lab, locking the heavy steel door behind me before placing the small glass vial on his desk.
Marcus looked up from his microscope, startled by my sudden intrusion.
"Julian, what is this?" he asked, pushing his thick glasses up the bridge of his nose.
"I need you to run a full chemical analysis on this fluid, and I need it kept completely off the official company records," I demanded, keeping my voice low.
Marcus frowned, sensing the absolute desperation in my tone, but he nodded without hesitation.
I sat in his office for three agonizing hours while the mass spectrometer did its work.
During that time, the persistent ringing in my ears actually seemed to lessen slightly, confirming my darkest suspicions.
Finally, Marcus walked back into the room, holding a printed data sheet, his face pale and drawn.
"Where did you get this, Julian?" Marcus asked, his voice tight with concern.
"Just tell me what it is," I replied, gripping the armrests of my chair.
"It is a highly concentrated, synthetic neurotoxin that specifically targets the auditory nerve pathways," Marcus explained, pointing to the chemical structure on the paper.
"It mimics the symptoms of sudden sensorineural hearing loss perfectly, leaving almost no trace in standard blood tests."
"If you continue ingesting this, the nerve damage will become permanent within another month."
"Eventually, the toxin will cross the blood-brain barrier, leading to severe cognitive decline and, eventually, a fatal aneurysm."
The room spun around me as the horrific reality of Cassandra's plan settled into my bones.
She didn't just want me deaf; she wanted me incapacitated, declared mentally unfit, and eventually dead.
As my wife, she would inherit my entire eight-billion-dollar empire without firing a single bullet.

I took the printout from Marcus, folding it carefully into my jacket pocket.
I was not going to be a victim in my own house, but I needed to play her game a little longer.
