Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Inside the box was a brand-new, custom-made stuffed bear, perfectly intact with two soft ears.
Leo hugged the bear tightly to his chest, beaming up at me with absolute joy.
Thank you, brave boy, I signed, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over my heart.
I stood up and handed Elena the thick manila folder I had brought with me.
"What is this, Mr. Vance?" she asked, looking nervously at the legal papers.
"It is a fully funded trust account in Leo's name," I explained gently.
"It will pay for his education, his medical needs, and any specialized ASL tutoring he ever wants."
"And the deed to this house is now officially in your name, paid in full."
Elena burst into happy tears, pulling me into a fierce, unexpected hug.
"You gave us our lives back," she whispered into my shoulder.
"No, Elena," I replied, pulling back and looking at the little boy playing on the floor.
"Leo gave me mine."
I left Seattle that afternoon, flying back down the coast as the sun began to set over the Pacific Ocean.
When I finally returned to my cliffside estate in Monterey, the house was quiet, but it was no longer a lonely silence.
It was the peaceful, golden quiet of a man who had walked through the fire and survived.
