Chapter 7 - Hide and Seek

From beneath the bed, I saw a pair of heavy, mud-caked combat boots step into the room.
It wasn't the police officer who had been guarding the door.
I held my breath, pressing my hand over my mouth to silence my own terrified gasps.
"Where is it, Thorne?" a deep, menacing voice demanded.
"I don't know," David lied weakly, the heart monitor beeping faster.
The man grabbed David by the collar of his hospital gown, lifting him slightly.
"The kid took it, didn't they?" the man growled, dropping David back onto the pillows.
The boots slowly turned and began to walk around the perimeter of the room.
He was looking for me.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
As the boots approached the edge of the bed, a nurse walked in with a tray of medication.
"Excuse me, visiting hours are over, who are you?" the nurse asked sharply.
The man cursed under his breath and quickly shoved past her, fleeing down the hallway.
I crawled out from under the bed, covered in a cold sweat.
"Run," David whispered, his eyes locked on mine with desperate intensity.

I didn't need to be told twice.
I slipped out the emergency exit, the cold rain hitting my face as I sprinted to my car.
