Chapter 5 - The Threat

I checked into a cheap motel on the outskirts of Columbus, far away from my suburban neighborhood.

I locked the deadbolt, pulled the flimsy curtains shut, and sat on the edge of the lumpy bed.

My cell phone buzzed on the nightstand, making me jump.

It was an unknown number.

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen, before finally swiping to answer.

"You have something that belongs to us," a raspy, distorted voice said through the receiver.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I lied, my voice shaking despite my best efforts.

"Your parents failed, but we know you found the drive in the master bedroom," the voice sneered.

My blood ran cold.

They had been watching the house, or perhaps they had cameras inside.

"Bring it to the old steel mill on Route 9 at midnight, or we will visit Mr. Thorne in the ICU," the man threatened.

Before I could say another word, the line went dead.

I sat in the silence of the motel room, realizing the danger was far from over.

Handing the drive to the police might not be enough if the cartel had officers on their payroll.

I needed to see David Thorne myself, to find out exactly what was on this drive and how to destroy these people.

I grabbed my jacket and headed out into the rainy night, my mind racing with a dangerous plan.
