Chapter 2 - The Standoff

"What did you do?" my father demanded, his voice dangerously low.
He took a slow step toward me, raising his hands in a placating gesture that felt entirely fake.
"Dad, who is that in there?" I screamed, my voice cracking under the weight of the betrayal.
My mother appeared behind him, her face pale, her eyes wide with a manic kind of fear.
"We can explain everything, sweetheart, just hang up the phone," she pleaded, reaching out to me.
"Do not come any closer!" I yelled, backing up until my shoulders hit the hallway window.
I kept the phone on speaker, making sure they knew the 911 operator was listening to every single word.
"Ma'am, officers are pulling up to your street right now," the operator announced loudly.
My father’s face went completely white.
He looked wildly at my mother, an unspoken, desperate conversation passing between them in a fraction of a second.
For a horrifying moment, I thought he was going to rush me, to throw me out of the way and silence the man in the room.
Instead, the wail of police sirens pierced the quiet suburban neighborhood, growing louder by the second.
Red and blue lights suddenly began flashing through the hallway window, painting my parents' terrified faces in harsh colors.
"It's over, Mark," my mother sobbed, collapsing against the banister.
"You have no idea what you've just done," my father whispered to me, his voice devoid of any warmth.
The front door was kicked open downstairs, and heavy footsteps flooded into our living room.
"Police Department, show me your hands!" a stern voice echoed up the stairwell.

I dropped to my knees, shaking violently as armed officers swarmed the second floor.
They pushed past my parents, slamming them against the wall to cuff them, while medics rushed into my bedroom to save the man I had found.
