Chapter 9 - The Role Reversal

Six months had passed since the disastrous birthday party by the garbage bins.

Winter had settled over the city, covering the streets in a blanket of pristine white snow.

Clara was walking out of a high-end department store, carrying a few beautifully wrapped presents for Lily’s upcoming Christmas celebration.

She was no longer wearing worn-out canvas nursing shoes.

David had officially graduated from his medical residency and secured a highly lucrative position as an attending surgeon at the best hospital in the state.

Clara had finally quit her grueling job at the diner, allowing herself to rest and focus on running the Harrington family’s charitable foundation.

She looked elegant, healthy, and incredibly happy in her warm cashmere coat.

As Clara walked toward her car, she stopped at a small coffee kiosk near the exit of the mall.

She ordered a hot latte and waited patiently for the barista to turn around.

When the woman behind the counter finally handed her the cup, Clara completely froze.

It was Beatrice.

Beatrice was wearing a heavily stained green apron, her hair pulled back into a messy bun, looking utterly exhausted.

The wealthy socialite who used to wear diamonds on a Tuesday was now working a minimum-wage job to pay rent for her small apartment.

Beatrice recognized Clara instantly, and the blood completely drained from her face.

Clara looked at the woman who had forced her daughter to sit next to the trash.

There was no anger left in Clara’s heart, only a profound, quiet pity.

Clara took the coffee, pulled a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill from her purse, and dropped it into Beatrice’s tip jar.

“Keep the change, Beatrice,” Clara said softly, her voice holding no malice, only finality.

“Have a Merry Christmas.”

Clara walked away, leaving Beatrice staring at the tip jar, weeping silent tears of ultimate humiliation.
