Chapter 2 - The Waitress Revelation

Beatrice stood frozen, her beige silk trousers suddenly feeling like a prison uniform as the eyes of fifty wealthy socialites bored into her.
“Mother Eleanor, surely you are overreacting,” Beatrice tried to whisper, stepping closer to avoid a public scandal.
“Clara is just a waitress, and we were only trying to keep the children organized.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, humorless laugh that echoed across the manicured lawn.
“A waitress?” Eleanor repeated, turning to face the crowd of gossiping adults.
“Is that what you have been telling your country club friends, Beatrice?”
Clara stood near the edge of the deck, her face burning with humiliation, wishing the ground would simply swallow her whole.
“Let me tell you exactly why Clara works double shifts at a diner,” Eleanor announced, her voice booming with undeniable power.
“Clara works on her feet for fourteen hours a day to pay for my grandson David’s medical school tuition.”
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd of designer-clad guests.
“David refused to take a single penny of Harrington money because he wanted to earn his medical degree entirely on his own.”
Eleanor pointed her silver-tipped cane directly at Beatrice’s chest.
“Clara is sacrificing her own comfort, exhausting her own body, to support the man she loves and raise this beautiful child.”
“She possesses more grace, more grit, and more dignity in her worn-out work shoes than you have in your entire hollow existence.”
Beatrice’s face drained of all color, matching the white linen tablecloths.
The guests who had been snickering just moments ago suddenly looked down at the ground in deep shame.
They realized they had not been mocking a lazy, poor relative.
May you like
They had been mocking a fiercely devoted mother who was building a doctor from the ground up.
Lily sat quietly at the head of the table, her tears drying as she watched her mother finally receive the respect she deserved.
