Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

Months passed, and the changing seasons brought the crisp, cool air of autumn.
My physical scars healed, and my baby continued to grow strong and healthy inside me.
I moved into a secure, private apartment funded by a domestic violence charity.
The district attorney called me into his office to discuss the upcoming trial strategy.
“We have a major break in the case,” the prosecutor announced with a triumphant grin.
“Mara took a plea deal.”
I sat back in my leather chair, completely stunned by the news of the family's betrayal.
“She flipped on David and her mother to avoid a life sentence,” the prosecutor explained.
Mara had provided the police with a full, recorded confession detailing the entire murder plot.
She admitted that they had planned my death for months, researching how long a person could survive without food or water.
She confirmed the life insurance motive and handed over text messages proving the conspiracy.
“She is going to testify against them in open court,” the prosecutor said.
David’s mother had suffered a massive panic attack in her cell when she heard the news.
The unbreakable, elitist family had instantly turned into a pack of starving wolves turning on each other.
“They thought they were untouchable,” I murmured, looking out the window at the city skyline.
“They are going to spend the rest of their lives in cages,” the prosecutor assured me.
He handed me a cup of warm tea, his expression softening into genuine kindness.
“You don't even have to testify if you don't want to,” he offered gently.
“The audio recordings and Mara’s confession are more than enough to convict them.”
I placed a hand on my round stomach, feeling a sharp, definitive kick from my baby.

“No,” I replied firmly.
“I want to take the stand, and I want them to look me in the eye when I tell the world what they did.”
