Chapter 4 - The Interrogation

Across town, inside the sterile walls of the police precinct, David sat in an interrogation room.
He had rubbed the dried mud off his face, trying to regain his arrogant composure.
His high-priced defense attorney sat next to him, looking annoyed by the late-night summons.
Detective Miller walked into the room, tossing a thick file folder onto the metal table.
“My client is the victim of a hysterical, mentally unstable woman,” the lawyer began smoothly.
“She buried herself in the yard during a psychotic episode to frame him.”
David nodded enthusiastically, adopting a look of deep, fake sorrow.
“I love my wife,” David lied, his voice dripping with false sincerity.
“I was only trying to dig her out when your officers broke down my fence and assaulted me.”
Detective Miller did not say a word.
He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out a digital recorder, and pressed the play button.
David’s own voice echoed off the concrete walls of the interrogation room.
“A wife who follows directions will never end up in the dirt.”
The lawyer’s smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, undeniable horror.
The recording continued, capturing David pouring water over my head and mocking my silence.
“All you have to say is that you understand why this happened.”
Detective Miller paused the tape and leaned across the metal table, staring directly into David’s eyes.
“That doesn't sound like a man trying to rescue his wife,” the detective whispered coldly.
“That sounds like a monster torturing a pregnant woman for fun.”
David’s mouth opened, but no words came out, his carefully constructed lies turning to ash.
“We also have your mother and your sister on tape,” Miller added, twisting the knife.
“Mara is already in the other room, crying and blaming the entire thing on you.”
The lawyer stood up, packing his expensive leather briefcase with frantic speed.
“I am withdrawing as counsel,” the lawyer said, refusing to even look at David.

“You are entirely on your own.”
David stared at the closed door, finally realizing that his reign of terror was over.
