Chapter 5 - The True Motive

I spent two full weeks in the hospital recovering from severe dehydration and muscle atrophy.

Detective Miller visited me every afternoon, bringing updates on the criminal case against my husband.

“We found something deeply disturbing in his financial records,” the detective said one afternoon.

He handed me a printed document detailing a massive life insurance policy.

“David took out a five-million-dollar policy on your life just three months ago,” Miller explained.

I stared at the numbers on the page, feeling a cold sickness settle in my stomach.

“He wasn't punishing me for disobedience,” I whispered, realizing the horrifying truth.

“He was trying to kill me slowly, making it look like exposure or a mental breakdown.”

The detective nodded grimly, confirming my darkest suspicion.

“If you had died in that dirt, he would have collected the money and played the grieving widower.”

His mother and sister were heavily in debt, drowning in unpaid credit cards and mortgage defaults.

They were all in on the plan, willing to watch me and my baby die for a share of the payout.

The cruelty was not just a symptom of their twisted family dynamic.

The cruelty was a calculated business decision.

“The prosecutor is upgrading the charges,” Detective Miller told me with a fierce smile.

“Attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony torture.”

They were looking at life in prison without the possibility of parole.

I handed the financial documents back to the detective, a new sense of strength rising in my chest.

“I want to be there at his bail hearing tomorrow,” I demanded firmly.

The detective looked surprised, noting my fragile physical condition and the IV still in my arm.

“Are you sure you are strong enough for that?” he asked gently.

“I survived days buried alive,” I replied, looking him dead in the eye.

“I am more than strong enough to watch him burn.”
