Chapter 10 - The Breath of Life

Two days after the trial ended, my water broke in the safety of my new apartment.

I did not feel fear, only an overwhelming sense of peace as the paramedics drove me to the hospital.

The labor was long, but every contraction felt like a step toward a brand-new life.

The doctors and nurses cheered as the final push brought my baby into the world.

A beautiful, screaming baby girl was placed onto my chest, her tiny hands grasping at my hospital gown.

She was warm, perfect, and completely untouched by the darkness her father had tried to bury us in.

I named her Hope.

Five years later, we stood in a beautiful, sunny park thousands of miles away from that cursed backyard.

The house where I was tortured had been seized by the state and eventually demolished.

Nothing remained of David’s legacy except empty dirt and a forgotten prison cell.

Hope ran across the green grass, chasing a yellow butterfly with bright, ringing laughter.

She tripped and fell softly into the dirt, her small hands getting covered in brown dust.

She looked up at me, waiting to see if she should cry.

I smiled warmly, walking over and lifting her into my arms.

“It's just dirt, sweetie,” I whispered, kissing her forehead.

“Dirt can’t hurt us anymore.”

I brushed the soil from her hands, holding her close as the warm afternoon sun washed over us.

We were alive, we were safe, and we were finally free.
