Chapter 8 - The Showdown in Court

The Manhattan Family Court building on Thursday morning resembled a fortress. Barricades held back hundreds of reporters and citizens waving placards demanding justice for Mia. Inside the high-security courtroom, the air was thick with tension as Judge Alvarez presided over the final termination of parental and familial rights.
Richard sat at the defense table, looking broken and aged, while Victoria sat rigid beside him, her face buried behind a veil of heavy black netting. Across the aisle, Julian sat quietly, his hand resting on a stack of medical and psychiatric evaluations that painted a horrific picture of Mia’s eight-month ordeal.
Evelyn Ross stood before the witness stand, where Victoria Van Der Bilt had been compelled to testify under subpoena.
"Mrs. Van Der Bilt," Evelyn said, her voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom. "You testified earlier that you were entirely unaware of the child's presence in your wine cellar. You claimed your household staff was responsible for her care."
"That is correct," Victoria murmured, clutching her pearl necklace. "I cannot be expected to monitor every servant’s actions."
Evelyn walked to her table and picked up an audio file tablet. "Then how do you explain the metadata recovered from your personal iCloud account by federal forensic investigators? Specifically, a voice memo recorded by you on October 14th of this year?"
Evelyn tapped the screen. Victoria’s shrill, unmistakable voice echoed through the courtroom speakers:
"Richard, the child won't stop whining down there. I can hear her through the floorboards in the library. If she keeps making noise during the charity gala tonight, I want the deadbolt double-locked and the housekeeper to skip her evening broth. I will not have David’s little mistake ruining our reputation."
Gasps erupted from the gallery. Judge Alvarez banged her gavel sharply to silence the room, her eyes burning with fury as she stared down at the witness stand.
Victoria began to tremble violently. The illusion of aristocratic grace shattered entirely. She ripped back her black veil, her face contorted in hysterical rage as she pointed a shaking finger across the room at Julian.
"She ruined everything!" Victoria screamed, tears of spite streaming down her face. "David was supposed to marry the Sterling heiress! He was supposed to secure our family’s legacy! Instead, he threw his life away on a penniless foreign cellist, and then left us with that thing! Every time I looked at that child’s face, I saw the woman who killed my son! She didn't deserve our name! She didn't deserve our money!"
"That is enough!" Judge Alvarez roared, slamming her gavel down with finality. "Bailiffs, remove the witness from the stand immediately!"
As two court officers physically guided a sobbing, cursing Victoria back to her seat, Judge Alvarez didn't even bother to retire to her chambers to deliberate. She looked directly down at Richard and Victoria Van Der Bilt.
"In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely encountered such calculated, malicious cruelty disguised as aristocratic privilege," Judge Alvarez stated, her voice shaking with righteous anger. "I hereby permanently terminate any and all biological, legal, and familial rights of Richard and Victoria Van Der Bilt regarding the minor child, Mia Van Der Bilt."

The judge turned toward Julian, her expression softening into deep respect.
"Furthermore, having reviewed the emergency adoption petition and the exemplary medical and psychological care provided over the past three weeks, I grant permanent legal custody and adoption rights to Mr. Julian Vance. This hearing is adjourned."
