Chapter 4 - The Erased Legacy

By two o'clock in the morning, the pediatric intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital was under complete lockdown. Three of Julian’s private security guards stood outside Room 412, ensuring no one from the outside world could get within fifty feet of the little girl sleeping inside.

Inside the room, Julian sat in a leather armchair beside the medical crib. Mia was hooked up to a warmed IV line delivering fluids and essential nutrients. After two hours of warm baths, thorough medical examinations, and a small cup of warm broth, she had finally fallen into a deep, exhausted slumber. Even in her sleep, one small hand remained tightly curled around the sleeve of Julian’s shirt.

The door opened silently, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a thick leather folder. His expression was grim.

"What did you find?" Julian asked quietly, careful not to wake the sleeping child.

"You were right, sir. The Van Der Bilts were lying about her being a staff member's child," Marcus whispered, pulling a set of printed documents from the folder. "Our forensic accounting and investigative team hacked into the family’s private legal archives over the last three hours. Her name isn't just Mia. Her legal name is Mia Van Der Bilt."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "Explain."

"Richard and Victoria had an estranged younger son, David," Marcus said, handing over a photograph of a handsome young man standing beside a beautiful Korean woman. "Three years ago, David defied his father’s arranged marriage plans and secretly married a Korean cellist named Ji-Young. Richard cut him off completely, stripped him of his corporate titles, and erased him from the family trust."

"And the child?"

"Born eighteen months later," Marcus continued, pointing to a birth certificate. "Eight months ago, David and Ji-Young were killed in a multi-car collision on the New Jersey Turnpike. Because David was the biological son, his legitimate heir—Mia—automatically inherited David’s generational trust fund under the original 1920 family charter. That trust is currently valued at four hundred million dollars."

Julian looked down at the fragile little girl sleeping in the hospital crib. The pieces of the sickening puzzle snapped together in his mind with crystalline clarity.

"If the child dies, or is legally declared abandoned and institutionalized under an assumed name, the trust reverts back to the primary estate," Julian said, his voice dripping with venom. "Back to Richard."

"Precisely," Marcus nodded. "They didn't just hide her because they hated her mother's heritage, Mr. Vance. They locked a toddler in a freezing wine cellar to systematically break her, erase her identity, and steal four hundred million dollars from their own granddaughter."

Julian reached out and gently smoothed a strand of dark hair from Mia’s forehead. A cold, absolute resolve settled into his chest.

"Contact our chief legal counsel," Julian instructed softly. "I want the most aggressive child advocacy lawyers in the country in this hospital by sunrise. We aren't just going to protect this little girl, Marcus. We are going to take everything the Van Der Bilts have ever owned."
