Chapter 5 - The Legal Standoff

At eight o’clock the following morning, the hospital floor’s elevator doors slid open to reveal a phalanx of tailored suits. Leading the pack was Arthur Sterling, senior managing partner of Manhattan’s most ruthless defense firm, accompanied by three associates carrying leather briefcases and a court process server.

They were met halfway down the corridor by Julian, who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his own legal lead, Evelyn Ross—a formidable attorney known across the country for destroying corporate giants in civil court.

"Mr. Vance," Sterling began, his voice oozing practiced legal grease as he held out a stack of stamped documents. "I represent Richard and Victoria Van Der Bilt. We are here to serve you with an emergency federal injunction and a temporary restraining order. You have illegally abducted a minor from my clients' private residence. You have ten minutes to surrender the child to her legal grandparents, or we will file kidnapping charges with the District Attorney."

Julian didn't even look at the papers. He kept his hands in his pockets, his eyes fixed on Sterling’s face.

"Is that your best opening gambit, Arthur?" Evelyn Ross interjected, stepping forward with a chilled, confident smile. She handed Sterling a single sheet of paper. "Because while you were drafting boilerplate injunctions at dawn, we were with the emergency judge of the Manhattan Family Court."

Sterling frowned, scanning the document. His eyes widened slightly.

"That is an emergency protective custody order," Evelyn explained smoothly. "Granted by Judge Alvarez based on preliminary medical evidence of severe physical neglect, starvation, and unlawful confinement. It temporarily suspends all parental and familial rights of Richard and Victoria Van Der Bilt and appoints Julian Vance as the child’s emergency medical and legal custodian."

"This is an outrage!" Sterling barked, his professional composure slipping. "My clients are pillars of New York society! You cannot substantiate these ridiculous claims of neglect based on a child playing in a basement!"

"Playing?" Julian took a step forward. The raw, imposing gravity of his presence made the older lawyer shrink back. "She has hairline fractures in her left wrist from an old, untreated injury. She has vitamin deficiencies so profound the pediatricians thought she was two years old instead of four. And we have audio recordings of your 'pillars of society' admitting she was locked behind a deadbolt."

"We will fight this in open court," Sterling threatened, though his voice lacked its previous conviction. "The Van Der Bilt estate has unlimited resources to drag this out for years, Mr. Vance. You will drown in litigation."

Julian leaned in close, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Arthur, tell Richard something for me. My liquid personal net worth is twelve times the total valuation of his entire real estate portfolio. I can fund this litigation for the next fifty years without noticing the expense. But if you don't take your associates and get off this floor right now, I will start releasing the pediatric hospital photos to the New York Times."

Sterling opened his mouth to argue, looked into Julian’s unblinking eyes, and closed it. Without another word, he turned on his heel and signaled his team to retreat to the elevators.
