Chapter 6 - The Media Storm

Julian knew that in a war against old Manhattan money, silence was the enemy’s greatest weapon. The Van Der Bilts had spent a century burying their scandals under non-disclosure agreements and strategic charitable donations. Julian decided to set off a digital bomb instead.
By noon on Saturday, the story had bypassed traditional print media entirely and exploded across digital news networks and social media platforms.
"MANHATTAN’S DIRTY SECRET: BILLIONAIRE JULIAN VANCE RESCUES STARVING HEIRESS TRAPPED IN VAN DER BILT CELLAR."
The headline was accompanied by a grainy, cell-phone video taken by a guest at the reception, showing Julian walking out of the grand ballroom carrying the filthy, barefoot toddler wrapped in his cashmere coat, while Victoria Van Der Bilt screamed in the background. Within three hours, the video had generated forty million views across social platforms.
Outside the Van Der Bilt townhouse on Fifth Avenue, a sea of news vans, protesters, and investigative journalists blocked the street, chanting for Richard’s arrest. The family’s corporate stock plummeted twelve percent in afternoon over-the-counter trading as major institutional investors scrambled to distance themselves from the PR nightmare.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of Hospital Room 412, oblivious to the global firestorm raging outside, Mia sat propped up on a pile of soft white pillows. For the first time since Julian had found her, she was wearing clothes that fit—a soft, lavender cotton pajamas brought in by one of the nurses.
Julian sat beside her bed, holding a small bowl of warm applesauce. He scooped a tiny amount onto a plastic spoon and held it out.
Mia hesitated. Her large, dark eyes tracked his face, searching for the hidden catch, the moment where the kindness would turn into anger. Slowly, she leaned forward and took the food.
"Good girl," Julian murmured gently. "Take your time, sweetheart."
After she swallowed, Mia reached out with her small, scarred hand and touched the sleeve of Julian’s shirt. Her grip was surprisingly strong.
"Ju-yeon," she whispered, mispronouncing his name with her soft Korean accent.
Julian’s heart melted. "That’s right. Julian. I’m right here."
She pointed to the wooden spoon sitting on the bedside table—the simple, battered implement she had surrendered to him in the dark cellar. Julian picked it up and placed it gently in her lap.

"Mine?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly, speaking her very first word in English.
"Yes, Mia," Julian said, his eyes stinging with unfamiliar tears as he closed his large hand over her tiny one. "It’s yours. And nobody is ever going to take anything away from you ever again. I promise you that."
