Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

Even in the brightest moments, the past has a way of casting long shadows.

A few weeks after the hospital wing opened, Dante received a secured envelope at his corporate office.

There was no return address.

Inside was a single photograph of a dilapidated, rusted cell in an unnamed South American prison.

Sitting on a filthy cot in the corner of the picture was Beatrice Rossi.

She looked skeletal, broken, and entirely devoid of her former arrogance.

Dante stared at the photograph for a long, quiet hour.

His lieutenant, Marco, stood nervously by the door.

"We arranged the transfer exactly as you asked, Boss," Marco said carefully.

"She will spend the rest of her life in that hellhole."

"Do you want me to authorize a care package?"

Dante picked up a silver lighter from his desk.

He ignited the flame and held it to the corner of the photograph.

He watched the image of his mother burn into black ash, letting it fall into the glass ashtray.

"No," Dante replied coldly.

"She made her choice the day she poisoned my son."

He brushed the ashes away and left the office, stepping out into the bright California sun.

He drove straight to the park where Camila was sitting on a picnic blanket with Leo.

The toddler was giggling wildly as a golden retriever puppy licked his face.

Dante sat down on the grass, pulling Camila close to him.

"Everything okay at the office?" she asked, noticing a fleeting shadow in his eyes.

"Everything is perfect," Dante smiled, kissing her forehead.

He realized that true power wasn't about ruling through fear or hoarding illegal wealth.

True power was the ability to protect the peace of a sunny afternoon with the people you love.
