Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"Tommy," I gasped, stepping in front of Leo. "What are you doing?"

"Sorry, Clara," Tommy muttered, looking down. "Moretti offered me a territory of my own. Marcus is bleeding out in the snow out back."

Moretti stepped forward, a cruel smile on his face. "Bring the boy. Leave the maid."

"No!" I screamed, lunging at Tommy. He backhanded me across the face, sending me crashing into the wall. My vision swam.

Tommy reached for Leo. But Leo didn't shrink back. The little boy who had spent a year paralyzed in a wheelchair stood up straight, his face a perfect mask of his father's fury. He grabbed a heavy iron fire poker I had brought down with us, swinging it with all his might into Tommy's kneecap.

Tommy howled, dropping to one knee.

Before Moretti could draw his weapon, a massive, bloodied shadow filled the doorway.

Marcus.

He didn't say a word. He raised his sidearm and put a bullet between Tommy's eyes. Moretti spun, but Marcus was faster, tackling the rival boss to the floor. It was brutal, primal, and terrifying. When Marcus finally stood up, breathing heavily, wiping blood from his jaw, the Moretti threat was extinguished forever.
