Chapter 4 - Ambush on I-95

We were loaded into a convoy of three black armored SUVs under the cover of darkness. I sat in the middle row of the center vehicle, Leo fast asleep against my side, Marcus sitting opposite us, a heavy tactical rifle resting casually across his knees.

"The Morettis know Gable failed," Marcus explained, his eyes scanning the dark highway. "They’re making a play for the territory. It’s going to get bloody."

"Will Leo be safe?" I asked, my voice tight.

"I would burn this city to the bedrock before I let anyone touch a hair on his head," Marcus vowed. Then, his eyes met mine. "Or yours."

Suddenly, the SUV swerved violently. Tires shrieked. A massive tow truck had blown through the median, slamming into our lead car, sending it flipping into the ditch.

"Get down!" Marcus roared.

Gunfire erupted, the sound deafening as bullets rained against our bulletproof glass. The driver slammed it into reverse, but a black sedan boxed us in from behind. We were trapped.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He kicked the door open, unleashing a hail of suppressing fire. "Clara! Get him to the woods! Go!"

I grabbed Leo, my heart in my throat, and threw myself out the opposite door. The cold November air bit at my lungs as I carried the boy, sprinting blindly into the treeline while the man who had become my whole world stayed behind to face an army.
