Chapter 7 - The Lion Wakes

With Marcus recovered, the dynamic in the cabin shifted. The unspoken attraction between us was no longer a hum; it was a roaring fire.

One evening, while Leo was asleep, I stood on the back porch, watching the snow begin to fall. Marcus stepped out, wrapping a heavy wool blanket over my shoulders. He didn't step back. His chest was pressed against my back, his breath warm against my neck.

"When this is over," he said quietly, "when the Morettis are gone... I want you to stay."

"As his nurse?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He turned me around, his hands gripping my waist. "You know exactly what I want you as."

He kissed me. It wasn't the tentative kiss of a cautious man; it was a claiming. It was hungry, desperate, and possessive. I kissed him back, wrapping my hands in his thick dark hair, surrendering to the chaotic, dangerous gravity of Marcus Vance.

But our peace was shattered the next morning. Tommy burst into the kitchen, his face pale. "Boss. They found us. A heavily armed convoy is coming up the mountain road. Ten minutes out."
