Chapter 8 - The Siege

"Lock them in the basement panic room," Marcus ordered Tommy, strapping on a tactical vest and loading a shotgun. His eyes were devoid of the warmth they’d held the night before. The Kingpin was back.
"I'm not leaving you," I argued.
"Clara, go!" he roared. "Keep my son alive!"
I dragged Leo into the reinforced basement bunker, sealing the heavy steel door just as the first explosions rocked the cabin above.
For two hours, the ground shook. Muffled shouts, automatic gunfire, and the terrifying sound of splintering wood echoed above us. Leo covered his ears, crying silently. I held him tight, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years. Keep him safe. Please, let Marcus live.
Then, sudden, deafening silence.
Someone began pounding on the steel door. "Clara! Open the door!"

It was Tommy's voice. But when I turned the heavy locking wheel and pushed the door open, the sight made my blood run cold.
