Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage Unlocked

Maya woke up to the gentle sound of birds singing and warm sunlight streaming through her massive window.
She sat up in a bed larger than her entire previous apartment.
The bedroom was decorated in soft creams and golds, screaming of quiet, ancient wealth.
Her baby was sleeping soundly in a handcrafted mahogany crib next to the bed.
A team of maids quietly entered the room, bowing respectfully to her.
"Good morning, Miss Hawthorne," the head maid said with a warm, welcoming smile.
"Your grandfather is waiting for you in the conservatory for breakfast."
Maya dressed in elegant clothes that had been perfectly tailored to her measurements overnight.
She carried her baby down the sweeping, winding marble staircase of the Hawthorne estate.
The mansion felt like a private museum, filled with priceless art and historical artifacts.
She found Alexander sitting at a glass table surrounded by hundreds of blooming orchids.
He stood up immediately when she walked into the room.
"Did you sleep well, my dear?" he asked, pulling out a chair for her.
"Better than I have in years," Maya admitted honestly.
Alexander gestured for her to sit, and servants immediately brought out a lavish, steaming breakfast.
"We received the expedited DNA results this morning, just to make it official," Alexander said.
He slid a thick, wax-sealed envelope across the glass table.
"It is a perfect match."
"You are officially Evangeline Hawthorne, and no one can ever take that from you."
Maya looked at the legal papers, a heavy wave of profound emotion washing over her.
She finally had a real name.
She finally had a true family history.
"I want you to take over the family's global philanthropic foundation," Alexander said suddenly.
Maya looked up, genuinely shocked by the immense responsibility.
"Grandfather, I don’t know anything about running a billion-dollar foundation."
"I was just a housewife struggling to survive."
Alexander smiled gently but firmly.
"You survived twenty-four years with absolutely nothing."
"You survived a toxic marriage to a family of venomous snakes."
"You have the Hawthorne resilience running deep in your veins."
"I will teach you everything you need to know about power."
Maya looked down at her hands, feeling a sudden, burning surge of confidence.
"Okay."
"I will do it."
Alexander smiled proudly, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
"Good."
"Because your first order of business is dealing with a severe pest infestation."
He handed her a slim, high-tech tablet.

On the screen was live security footage of the Hawthorne estate’s massive front gates.
Standing outside in the pouring rain, looking ragged and desperate, was Victoria Sterling.
