Chapter 10 - The True Heiress

One full year later.

The grand ballroom of the massive Hawthorne Plaza Hotel was glowing with thousands of crystal chandeliers.

It was exactly one year since the dark night Maya’s life had shattered and gloriously rebuilt itself.

But tonight was not a selfish corporate merger.

Tonight was the highly publicized grand opening of the Hawthorne Foundation for Orphaned Children.

Hundreds of elite guests were in attendance, but they were not there out of greed.

They were there to donate millions of dollars to vulnerable children who had nothing.

Maya stood confidently on the grand stage, looking out over the massive crowd.

She was no longer the frightened, submissive, beaten housewife.

She was Evangeline Hawthorne, the most powerful and respected woman in the city.

Her grandfather, Alexander, sat in the front row, beaming with immense, overwhelming pride.

Colonel Vance stood near the exit, keeping a watchful, highly protective eye over the entire room.

Maya stepped up to the crystal microphone.

The entire massive hall went completely silent, hanging onto her every single word.

"A year ago, I was told that I had no history, no bloodline, and no inherent value," Maya began, her voice steady and powerful.

"I was told that my ultimate worth was defined by where I came from."

She smiled softly, a genuine look of peace washing over her beautiful features.

"They were entirely wrong."

"My worth wasn't defined by the legendary Hawthorne name."

"My worth was forged in the brutal fire of absolute survival."

"It was forged by the unconditional love I have for my incredible son."

The crowd erupted into deafening, thunderous applause.

Maya looked down at the front VIP table.

Her one-year-old son was happily clapping his tiny hands, sitting safely on his great-grandfather’s lap.

He was entirely safe from the cruelty of the world.

He would never know the deep, lingering pain of being unwanted.

He would never know the evil cruelty of the Sterling family.

Maya gracefully raised her crystal champagne glass, and the hundreds of guests mirrored her movement perfectly.

"To the bright future," Maya said clearly.

"To real family."

"And to never letting anyone tell you that you are worthless."

She drank the champagne as the massive room exploded into cheers once again.
