Chapter 1 - The Crest of the Titans

The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound that Maya could hear the crystal chandeliers softly clinking above.

Colonel Marcus Vance stood completely still.

He held the tarnished silver pendant as if it were a live grenade.

Victoria Sterling’s mocking smile slowly faded into a mask of confused irritation.

She let out a harsh, uncomfortable laugh that echoed through the quiet hall.

"Colonel, you are interrupting a very important evening over a piece of rusted garbage," Victoria snapped.

Vance turned his cold, piercing gaze toward the wealthy matriarch.

"This piece of rusted garbage, Mrs. Sterling, is a Class-A Alpha clearance medallion."

Whispers immediately erupted among the politicians and tycoons in the room.

Several military contractors in the crowd suddenly went pale and took a step back.

"It was issued to exactly one family in the history of the United States," Vance continued.

He took a slow, deliberate step toward Victoria, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

"The Hawthorne family."

A collective gasp tore through the wealthy crowd.

Even Victoria stumbled back, her confident posture instantly crumbling.

The Hawthornes were not just a rich family.

They were an untouchable global empire that controlled defense contracts, international shipping, and global banking.

Twenty-four years ago, the billionaire heir to the Hawthorne empire and his wife were killed in a tragic plane crash.

Their infant daughter, however, was never recovered from the wreckage.

Vance turned his back on Victoria and looked gently at Maya.

Maya pulled her crying baby closer to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Twenty-four years ago, I led the search and rescue team for the Hawthorne family," Vance said, his voice cracking with emotion.

"We scoured the mountains for three months and found absolutely nothing."

He gently held the pendant out toward Maya, pointing to the back of the metal.

"This medallion has a micro-engraving visible only under military-grade ultraviolet light."

"It bears the name of the lost heiress."

He looked deeply into Maya’s tear-filled eyes.

"Your name is not Maya."

"You are Evangeline Hawthorne."

"The sole surviving heir to a five-hundred-billion-dollar empire."

Victoria let out a loud, desperate scoff, pointing a trembling finger at Maya.

"That is impossible, she is a nobody from a state-run group home!"

Vance pulled a secure, encrypted satellite phone from his jacket.

"We will see about that," Vance whispered.

He dialed a single number and pressed the phone to his ear while the entire room watched in absolute terror.

May you like

"General Hawthorne?" Vance said into the receiver.

"I finally found her."
